Stay hydrated

We list six ways that water can improve our health. As water (or lack thereof) is often associated with thirst, we also look at why you need to consider visiting your pharmacist or healthcare practitioner if you are experiencing constant thirst.

  1. Water can refresh your skin. A dehydrated skin will often be dry and less elastic and can cause wrinkling. In addition to water, keep your skin moisturised by applying body cream and a good facial moisturiser.2
  2. Water can aid weight loss. Water not only helps keep those munchies at bay. Drinking a glass of water before a meal can stop you from over-eating, and will also help the body to absorb minerals.3, 4
  3. Water assists with joint lubrication. Water can help to reduce friction between joints, thereby reducing the risk of developing joint injuries and even potentially arthritis. It also assists in lubricating the eye and the development of saliva which facilitates chewing and swallowing.4
  4. Water energises the body. If the body is hydrated, the heart does not need to work that hard to pump blood through the body. This results in more oxygen reaching our muscles and organs. 1
  5. Water gets rid of toxins. Water can assist in our waste removal system by diluting salts and minerals and carrying it out of the body. Water also assists in the digestion process and reduces constipation.1
  6. Water regulates body temperature. Heat is released from our bodies by perspiration, water evaporation and finally blood redirected to blood vessels under the skin.1

As important as water is in regulating our bodies, it is also an indicator as to how healthy we are, or need to be. If you have a constant thirst that never seems to go away, you might want to consider seeing a pharmacist or medical practitioner as this may be an indicator of diabetes or dehydration2,6
